A Look Back at the IPPY Awards Since 1996
It all started in 1996 with a simple idea: independent books deserve to be recognized.
At the time, most major literary awards and “best of the year” lists focused on the same big-name publishers and bestselling titles. While those books certainly had their place, countless outstanding works from independent publishers and self-published authors were often left out of the conversation. The Independent Publisher Book Awards—better known as the IPPYs—were created to change that.
From the beginning, the goal was to celebrate the creativity, courage, and originality of independent publishing. The awards created space for bold voices, unique perspectives, and stories that might not otherwise receive national attention. Thirty years later, that mission is still going strong.
A Community That Continues to Grow
When the IPPY Awards launched in 1996, the program received 325 entries across about 20 categories. It was a modest start, but the purpose was clear: create a place where independent books could be recognized and celebrated on their own terms.
The response from the publishing community was immediate. Within just a few years, participation had grown dramatically as independent authors and publishers embraced an award created specifically for them.
As independent publishing continued to grow, so did the IPPYs. Today, the awards receive thousands of submissions each year across more than 100 categories, reflecting the incredible diversity of voices, ideas, and genres within the independent publishing world.
From literary fiction and memoir to children’s books, poetry, regional titles, and niche nonfiction, the IPPYs celebrate the wide range of stories being told by independent creators.
Evolving Alongside Independent Publishing
Over the past three decades, the publishing industry has changed in big ways. Digital technology has opened new doors for authors. Self-publishing has become more accessible. Independent presses continue to experiment, innovate, and bring fresh perspectives to readers around the world.
The IPPY Awards have evolved right alongside these changes.
New categories have been introduced as genres expand. The entry process has become more streamlined and accessible for authors and publishers across the globe. Most recently, a refreshed website experience has made it easier than ever to submit books and explore past winners.
While the industry continues to evolve, the heart of the IPPYs has stayed the same: championing independent voices and celebrating exceptional books.
